Smith served in the U.S. Navy as an engineering officer before earning a master’s degree in geology. He spent his career in the energy industry, beginning as an exploration geologist and later serving as a corporate officer in publicly traded and private companies. In 2004, he founded Optimal Value Energy after leaving his role as Vice President of Energy Supply and Marketing. He now lectures and writes on energy topics and has testified before major U.S. and Canadian regulatory commissions.
